Flat pedals give you the freedom to put a foot down and need no special shoes. Clipless pedals lock your foot in for more efficient pedalling but require matching cleats and shoes. Dual-function pedals give you one of each side, which is the sensible pick if you're still deciding. Sealed bearings last considerably longer than loose-ball.
